FEAR OF FOLK
'Fear of Folk: Why folk art and ritual horrifies in Britain' is an academic research paper that explores folk art, design and horror in British visual culture.
The paper was published by Intellect (available to download and read here) and my research was presented at the 'Function of Folk' conference held at the Seweryn Udziela Ethnographic Museum in Kraków.
I discuss in particular the ritual of the maypole, hair work objects, the writing of Barbara Jones, Margaret Lambert and Enid Marx, Raymond Williams, Antonio Gramsci and study The Wicker Man and its design in depth. The paper was published in a 28 page booklet, which I designed with reference to seventeenth century broadside publications discussed in the text.
